Contact Lenses FAQs
At Eye Street Optical, our vision professionals strive to answer all of our patient’s questions about contact lenses. We help residents in and around Chantilly, VA achieve the best eye care possible. Our team has gathered some of the most frequently asked questions that we run into regarding contact lenses.
Are contact lenses safe?
With proper care and maintenance, you can ensure that your eyes remain healthy while wearing contact lenses.
Can I lose a lens behind my eye?
The conjunctiva covers the sclera and the inside of your eyelids are attached to the sidewalls of your eye socket so there is nowhere for the lens to go. Although you cannot lose a lens, it can get lost way up and under the upper lid. Flush your eye with water or saline and the lens should come out.
Do I have to clean my contact lenses daily?
This depends on the type of contact lens. Hard extended wear lenses are designed to stay in the eyes for a long time. However, soft contact lenses must be cleaned daily to ensure they are comfortable and safe to wear.
How do I clean my contact lenses?
Start by washing your hands. Next, apply a contact lens solution to the contact until it is submerged. Gently rub the lenses with your index finger. Never clean your lenses with saliva, saline, or tap water.
How should I store my contacts?
After cleaning them, place them in a lens case with a contact lens solution. Cover each eye compartment and tighten the lid. You can clean your empty lens case with a fresh contact lens solution. Air-dry the case face down on a clean towel. Replace your case every three months.
My lens has a small tear in it that doesn’t bother me. Should I replace it?
Never wear a lens that is damaged. It can cause damage to your eyes that you might not even notice. Also, never wear a lens that is uncomfortable or causes pain.
Do contacts expire?
The expiration date on any soft contact is usually four years after they were manufactured. Hard contact lenses are usually shipped dry, so there is no risk that the lenses will get contaminated. This means that they do not usually have an expiration date.
Can I sleep with my contact lenses?
Hard, gas permeable contact lenses and certain soft lenses can be slept in, but check with our opticians at Eye Street Optical first.
